Everest Base Camp

Jon and the group of Classic climbers made it to Everest base camp.  He called from his sat phone and said that it's going well but it is exceptionally cold. They'll be there a couple of days and then head back to Lobuche.  The wifi at base camp is not up and running yet so he does not have access to email to send pictures to the blog.

IMG posted some pictures of base camp.  If you click the top picture on the April 9th post, you can see Jon at the back of the dining tent on the left.  Click "Next" and it scrolls through a lot of good pictures of base camp and the mountain.

Here's the link to track his location:

  2. Jon, thanks for bringing us all along for the ride, and doing the hard work part. It's been fun following the GPS tracker and finding "street" views on the map, or maybe it's "yak path" views. That's some hard country up there and must be an amazing experience. Soak it all in and please be careful. Best of luck!!!

    Description:
Mt Everest Base Camp is the most popular destination for trekkers in Nepal. Its popularity has grown since the first expeditions to the Nepalese side of Everest in the 1950s.
The Everest Base Camp trek, a very well known mountain trek, starts from Lukla (2804m) and follows the Dudh Kosi valley which climbs up to the Sherpa capital of Namche, a bustling bazaar that’s a junction for trekkers, the local Sherpa and expedition groups.
All along this part of the trail, villages are interspersed with magnificent forests of rhododendron, magnolia and giant firs. In both the early autumn and late spring, the flowers on this portion of the trek make it the kind of walk you will remember for a long, long time.

The trek takes off from Lukla. First we should take 30 minutes morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and we land its tiny at Lukla Airstrip then our trek start to Khumbu Region. The trek follows the Dudh Kosi valley route with an ascent up to the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar. From Namche, you traverse along a high path from where you have the first good view of Everest. You head towards Thyangboche Monastery located on top of a mountain ridge and then descend the Imja Khola and continue to the villages of Pangboche and Pheriche. After that you arrive at the Khumbu Glacier. The trek through the glacier takes you first to Lobuche and then to Gorak Shep, where you finally reach your destination, Everest Base Camp at the foot of the Khumbu ice falls.

  7. I had always wanted to trek to ABC. When I retired at 65 last February, I saw the chance to do it but the problem is, I can no longer do it like my younger days, on my own. I definitely needed help from someone to guide and advise me, carry by haversack, provide me with good facilities and most importantly, all these at a reasonable price. I just cannot depend on my friends. A friend from Germany had done this trip and strongly recommended me Sanjib Adhikari. I trusted my friend, took the advice and I did not regret. The warm welcome was felt right from the time they received me at the airport and for the next twelve days, until I said goodbye. Everything was taken care of to my utmost satisfaction. I cannot compare with other service providers as I had not used them but as far as I am concerned, Sanjib Team is excellent enough. Thank you Mr Sanjib and Raj for the excellent hospitality. I will be back

  8. Trekking in Nepal is still the most favorite adventure

holiday activity in the country. The two classic trekking routes either to Everest base camp or the Annapurna circuit are not easy

and the challenge you'll face on either route will have a lasting effect. The Manaslu route trek around the world's

eighth largest mountain is more remote but no less beautiful passing through stunning bamboo forests, villages filled with prayer

flags and culminating with spectacular views from Larkya La. Mustang is an easier cultural trek, suitable for those with good general

fitness but not necessarily any previous trekking experience. The language, culture and tradition of the Mustang region are still mostly Tibetan

making this one of the most culturally interesting treks. There are shorter treks up the Langtang Valley and Helambu which

are still hard work but also deeply rewarding. They generally begin in Kathmandu, leading through large grazing areas covered in

flowers, dotted with stone huts used for butter making, Sherpa, Tamang villages and the homes of yak herders, right up to the Tibetan

    border.
